Linda: Welcome to our WPRP video mini-series, “Would You Like Fries with That?” I’m Linda Anlauf, and today we’re going to talk about height-to-depth ratio when using single rows. Per the Rack Manufacturer’s Institute, a 6:1 heigh-to-depth ratio is within acceptable standards. The way that you figure that out is to look to see where the top beam level is located. For example, if you had a 240″ frame and the beam was located at the top of that frame, we would take 240″ and divide that by the depth of the frame (in this case 42″). Two hundred forty divided by 42 would give you a 5.7 ratio, which is within the acceptable range. If, however, you get above that — say, a 7:1 ratio or even a 6.1 ratio, then we need to talk to the manufacturer and determine if perhaps you need large footplates, over-aisle cross ties, or even wall ties. And, this is something we have to look at only for single rows.
